Create your magic 🔮

Ahoj, my magical friend! Did you sense the Knight of Swords activity? I always forget to stop and breathe when I get really excited about something and I talk so fast no one can understand a word I'm saying. When the momentum picks up, you've got to remember to inhale! (And exhale.)

So, take a deep breath right now. Seriously, wherever you are reading this, just close your eyes and take a deep breath (you better not be driving and reading!). Feel different?

Onto the tarot ✨

This week, we have … the Three of Wands!

Wands represent Fire - your passion, drive, creativity, the things that light you up and get you out of bed. Wands can also signify artistry and ideas, and the three is about building foundations and moving through your challenges to explore new opportunities.

There is a lot of creativity within you aching to be free, do you have the courage to release it? The Three of Wands signifies a readiness, the fire you're building has caught and you leveled up.

What's one creative endeavor you're ready to step into? Comment and tell me what is longing to be shared!

Embark on your magic 🏇🏽

你好, my magical friend! Tell me - was the Seven of Swords lifting the veil anywhere for you? For me it was about making myself believe that I'd get all the things done when I returned from a bucket list trip to Amsterdam.

News flash, I did not. But I did connect with several people and made the space for a few things that were time sensitive. Eventually, I made it to the laundry, cleaning the bathroom, and writing this email…I lied to myself on that one for sure!

Onto the tarot ✨

This week, we have … the Knight of Swords!

Another Sword! By now you probably remember that Swords represent Air - everything to do with your mind, intellect, wisdom, communication, technology, language. The Knight of Swords is about swift action alongside your thoughts and ideas.

It's clear to see this figure charging ahead with sword raised, the idea leading. But we're also starting a Mercury retrograde today, scrambling communication, technology, thoughts, and more. Don't be surprised if you get lost in translation or are having difficulties with [insert name of tech here].

Where can you take action while devoting special care to the details again and again? Comment with your ideas that are ready to engage!

Embark on your magic,
Emily

PS - I'm experimenting with hello in lots of languages - is there one you want to see? Tell me! Today's is Chinese, nǐ hǎo.

Honesty in your magic ✨

Lay it on me - was the Five of Swords energy popping? Did you exercise your integrity? Comment with your truth.

Onto the tarot ✨

This week, we have …
the Seven of Swords!

Swords represent Air - your mind, intellect, wisdom, communication, technology, language, your thoughts - the Seven of Swords is about deception and trickery. Stay truthful, white lies pile up and communication can sour.

Honesty is important in relationships, and more important when it comes to conversations with yourself. When you're honest about what you want and need, your world awakens to furnish it.

Where are you withholding candor? Where can you lead with authenticity? Comment with where your truth shines!

Magic with integrity 🪞

Hello, First name / my friend! How was your week? Did you notice the Two of Wands energy? Where did you see ignition? Where did you stall?

Comment. I'm listening.

For now, the tarot ✨

This week, we have …
the Five of Swords, reversed!

Swords represent Air - anything and everything mental, from intellect and wisdom to communication, technology, language, and of course your thoughts. The Five of Swords is about pausing the battle and reconsidering the strategy. What is working? What isn't? Success at the expense of others dilutes integrity, so when limitations feel daunting, use them to redirect your energy.

Not all tarot readers use reversals, or inversions, some see the negative interpretation of the card. I believe that every card holds the full spectrum of its meaning so that's not my jam; in reversals I recognize the internal expression of the card - it is about you and your relationship with yourself - or that it's something that needs to be dropped.

Where are your opportunities to step into your integrity? Where do you already nail it? Comment and let me know where you find that virtue and bring integrity to your magic!

Igniting your magic 🔥

How was last week? Did you notice the King of Pentacles energy? Where did you see abundance? What about recognizing scarcity?

I do want to know what communication challenges you're struggling with and how I can support you. What is keeping you from telling your story? Comment. Let me know.

And now, onto the tarot ✨

This week, we have …
the Two of Wands!

Wands represent fire - creativity, passion, everything that lights you up, and gets you out of bed. The Two of Wands reminds you to stay open minded. There's also the feeling of one match lighting another. With new ideas comes new perspectives, new opportunities to discover, new partnerships that could go the distance.

Two is early in the numerical cycle (1-10), so this card represents the earliest phases of a project beginning to take form.

Where are you seeing new ideas or inspiration igniting? Look for more of it, and celebrate your observation. Then comment and let me know where you found that revelation!

New (astro) year, new idea 💡

Oh hey stranger! How are you? What’s happening in your life? I’m trying something in this new (astro) year - debuting a weekly tarot reading to kick off your Moon Day! Please please please comment with what resonates and what doesn't.

And now for some tarot ✨

To kick things off, we have …
the King of Pentacles!

An image of the Rider Waite Smith Tarot deck King of Pentacles card with a wise king sitting on his throne looking contemplative as he surveys his resources.

The King of Pentacles (sometimes called the King of Coins or Discs) is the pinnacle of his suit. Pentacles represent the element of earth - the physical, material, the manifest - and correspond to the physical plane.

The King of Pentacles is grounded, sure of his resources, and uses them wisely and strategically. He considers the results of his actions. With a paternal sense of understanding that each of us must learn to manage the infinite well of resources within, the King of Pentacles invites us to tap into the abundance we already have.

Where are you seeing abundance? Where can you utilize the resources you have? Let me know what you discover when you utilize your magic!

Focusing your magic

Because you're the only one who can 🎥

Hello, my friend!  How have you been?  I am working on practicing what I preach, so thanks for bearing with me as I find my center.  There has been so much happening and the best part is that it all brings me joy!

From working with clients like Broadway Unlocked and All Together Now, plus a yet-to-be-announced holiday show, to diving deeper into my tarot practice and how I share that with the world, to the return of the monthly industry dance party S.N.O.B., to really enjoying New York and my chosen family and the fact that we can see people again (hot vaxx summer!!), my myraid of facets are each getting their time in the sun.

But what happens when it's time to pull a focus?  When there's one facet that needs a bit more attention, some extra TLC, or simply demands a moment in the spotlight, it's up to us to focus our magic.

This weekend I gave old friends and new their time in my attention spotlight with a weed-infused dinner party on Staten Island hosted by the chef-friend of a chef-friend I've known since elementary school, a birthday shindig in Hoboken for one of my oldest musical theatre pals, and some community gardening and grilling in Long Island City with a college friend who is a constant reminder to be unapologetically yourself.  I didn't give much time to work this weekend, but I allowed play to be the focus, and boy was it fun!

Focus isn't always something that shows up for me ("it's time to pull a focus!" anyone?), but when I reconsider what focus means in the broader context of life, it sure is easy.  What are you choosing to focus on?  Reply and let me know ✨

Balancing your magic

How much is on your plate? 🍽

Happy Summer Solstice, my friend!  We are out here enjoying our long summer evenings and celebrating the world waking back up.  But what happens when we try to invite all of the returning beloved things from the before times to live alongside the pandemic habits that we want to continue in our lives?  The buffet is open and the plates are FULL.

This reentry balancing act has all of us stumbling around like drunk children, bumping into each other and whacking our wounds in the process.  We are being inundated with both invitations and FOMO, the confusion of having been told that we can abruptly stop practicing the symptoms of depression that were forced on our systems over the last year and a half.

Slowly I'm learning this new balance - welcoming practices that I've integrated into my life during the pandemmy (centering social justice! my deepening tarot and spiritual practices! rejecting urgency for urgency's sake! prioritizing self-care and my own wellbeing!), and integrating things that I miss from the before times (the theatre! working somewhere other than home! drinks with friends! S.N.O.B.!).

It feels like learning to walk all over again, but I'm determined to continue to fine tune the balancing act for the rest of my life.  What are you learning to balance for yourself?  Reply and let me know ✨

Decolonizing your magic

When the reframe allows for ease 💆

Hi, my friend!  How are you doing?  Can you believe that summer is here?!  My favorite season happens to coincide with parts of the world coming to life and with that, the return of “the hustle.”

Last time I wrote about resting and how being flung into things quickly caused me to drop it all and run off to the woods when given the opportunity.  And that all got me thinking and speaking with the people in my life - how we see “the hustle” as the only way to succeed and calling everything else “lazy.”  But what if it isn't laziness, but EASE?

The concept was one that my hypnotherapist named for me - as I was sharing with her my history of how things often came easily to me, I framed not wanting to run myself into the ground with hard work as being lazy.  But as she pointed out, that is the colonizer's mindset - keep people busy so that they don't have a chance to think, or feel, or reconsider how there may be other ways of moving through the world.  So I've been focusing on the reframe of EASE.  It isn't that I don't work hard and am not willing to get my hands dirty when needed, but things don't always have to be so exhausting and difficult.

So, this summer I am continuing the work on reframing how things flow to and through me with ease and ditching that L word.  What are you decolonizing for yourself?  Reply and let me know ✨

Resting your magic

Sometimes rest is what we need 😴

Hello, my friend!  Did you miss me?!  Life's movement has been picking back up and to be honest it has me a little discombobulated.  We went from very little motion in our home spaces to a slingshot feeling of being out in the world and social calendars and work calendars picking back up (just me?).

The last few weeks were a bit overwhelming as several exciting opportunities presented themselves to me, while I continued working on the projects that have lit me up over the last year and change.  Learning to balance this new plate has been pretty fucking challenging, so when I had the opportunity to drop the plate and head into nature for a few days, I jumped at the chance.

The rest and unplug were deeply needed as things have been picking up, and I'm really glad that I listened to myself.  The biggest moment of growth was that I didn't shame myself for stepping away from my responsibilities for a few days and allowed myself the total relaxation that ultimately allowed me to get back and dive in with a verve I haven't felt in almost a year and a half (yes prepandemic, I'm not even talking March.  I'm talking January 2020)

Is rest something that you're allowing for yourself? Reply and let me know ✨

Intertwining your magic

There are so many parts to bring together 🧬

Hello, my friend!  Did the new moon bring you space for something new?  Maybe the capacity to start to intertwine the parts of yourself together and learn how to bring all of you to everything you do. It's not been easy, but I've realized that is the challenge that's been laid out for me.

Discovering the other facets of who I am and not allowing my identity to be dominated by my love of theatre and Broadway has been a major shift - I don't love the theatre any less, and long for the time when I'm seeing shows as often as I once did!  But there is so much more to me than that one thing that I centered for most of my life.

For starters, I can't fully accept the return of an industry that hasn't done its work around systemic injustice and outdated beliefs (that were never ok to begin with!).  Social justice has become part of the fabric of my business practice.  Supporting the artists doing the work while I do my own has been an honor.

Self-awareness and spirituality practices have become a normal part of my life since starting therapy 7 years ago, and through that my love for tarot evolved.  Now it is one of my biggest joys and the fun of collaborating on readings is a regular experience.

I also have a deep love of language and communication.  Facilitating dialogue! Creative thinking! Helping you translate your art and work, and teaching you how to talk about what you do so that you get seen - that is my pleasure.  Amplifying unheard voices (and inner voices!) makes my heart burst.  And I helped write a course so you can learn how to do it yourself.  Get your voice heard!

Initially when I started paying attention to each of these facets of myself, they felt like pivots.  Then I realized the power in connecting them, and it's become my practice.  Bringing my whole self to everything I do.  Easier said than done!

What aspects of yourself are you working to connect? Reply and let me know ✨

Curiosity in the magic

The Purple Globes, Part 2 🔮

Hello, my friend!

Remember the purple globes from my Grandma?  They got me thinking - how often has that particular image popped up?  And when did it start?  Thank you to the search feature for indulging my curiosity!

As early as July 2016, there it was - and it consistently showed up over the next 5 years until I noticed it.  Something I asked for at the beginning of 2021 started presenting itself to me FIVE YEARS AGO, but until I got curious about it, I had no idea.  And some of the texts are astonishing.

“Time is irrelevant when dancing with the other realm 🔮”

“I'm just over here toiling away in my cave, makin' magic 🔮”

“The coven fucking showed up when I put out the call ✨🔮”

“I made an offering of sauce to the ancestors and we had pasta 🔮”

\It's a testament to the limiting beliefs of time and space that something can begin to show up for you long before you've actually asked for it.  Thanks to my asking for, and acknowledgement of seeing this particular sign, it has me thinking about what else I've missed.  Where else I have experienced things I've asked for but didn't recognize it?  When can I revisit to remember how it felt to receive what I requested?  I don't know the answer, but I am curious AF to explore it.

Noticing the magic

Because it is everywhere 🔮

How are you, my friend?  The recent run of sunny days here in New York has my spirits brighter than they've been in a while.  I can't wait until it is fully summer and time for shorts and sandals - it is so much easier to be out in the world when the temperature invites it!  In the meantime, have you noticed that hope in the air?

To be honest, sometimes I'm really excellent at noticing things, and other times they can bang me over the head and still I don't see it.  Take the purple globes.  After listening to Laura Lynne Jackson's book Signs: The Secret Language of the Universe, I decided to ask my Grandma (who died when I was 7, so I didn't have all that much time with her) for a purple globe as a sign.  My dad's mother was a teacher and I figured a map or globe in her classroom would be a fun sign to ask for, and threw in the purple signifier to make it specific.  Then I waited.

A few months later I was talking to my bestie Jenn and telling her about the ask for the sign, and that I'd not yet seen a purple globe anywhere.  Her response?  “What about that emoji that I always send you?  The purple globe.  You're the only person I send it to and I have no idea why.”  I lost it.  The sign had been there all along and I hadn't noticed.  I was preoccupied with what I THOUGHT it would look like instead of being open to how the sign presented itself.

Once I recognized that the sign looked a little different, I began to see it everywhere.  Jenn even had a glass purple globe that had been gifted to her years ago by a former coach.  Its new home?  On my altar where I notice it every day.

Accountability in the magic

Our actions cause reactions 🧑🏽‍🔬

Hello, my friend. How are you doing? This week has been quite the roller coaster - the emotional highs and lows have been very high and very low, both personally and globally.  I had quite a positive explosion of emotion in response to a clear affirmation of spirit, followed by a very deep sinking feeling reading the response to an email that I sent telling a journalist I'd expected more of them and their holding power brokers accountable.  This was before the news about the conviction and then the fucked up experience of learning about the murder of Ma'Khia Bryant by Columbus Police.  And that was just Tuesday.

While many rejoiced and touted justice, those that referred to the verdict as accountability resonated most deeply for me.  Derek Chauvin was held accountable for his actions.  He made the choice to take George Floyd's life and thankfully has to answer for that.  The verdict offered hope that others will also be held accountable for their actions.  There is no longer room for inflicting trauma, abuse, or harassment, and those that do must answer for it.  It's something that young people are fighting for, and I'm incredibly grateful to join them.

Accountability is not reserved for negative action, anything we do has the opportunity for accountability - from how we show up in our relationships to the work we do to making dinner for ourselves vs ordering in.  The dictionary definition of accountability is an obligation or willingness to accept responsibility or to account for one's actions.  Many who are held accountable publicly are not necessarily willing, but do become obligated with enough pressure.  But this isn't just cancel culture.  Accountability requires the active party to do something about their actions, to accept responsibility and the consequences that follow.  Karma's only a bitch if you are.  Here's to creating equitable reactions and accountability for both the positive and negative.

Slogging through the magic

Hard work is real 😓

Hello again, my friend! How are you doing? The world continues to turn and to burn, and we're still here making our way through each day, moment, and breath. But not everyone is fortunate enough to do that.  Please take a moment to honor the life of Daunte Wright, another victim of the white supremacist patriarchal system of policing whose life was senselessly taken this week.

Every day we're bombarded with the news of more police brutality, another tragedy, another mass shooting, more deaths in a global pandemic, humanitarian issues around the world, and any number of devastating stories.  How do you go on? Sometimes it feels like a slog. Like we'll never catch a break in the trauma, and obviously I can't speak to the trauma of our siblings of color which has been inflicted over hundreds of years.

The definition of slog is hard work over a long period of time and can be either a verb or noun.  To me, it's evocative of trying to walk through mud up to your waist or the feeling of sludge.  And yet, we still keep moving.  Sometimes we need to take the time to rest, recuperate, and reflect (which is also a form of resistance!), but without movement, nothing changes.

Hugs in the magic

I'm bringing them back 🤗

Hello from my living room floor, my friend! For the first time in 15 months, my parents are able to visit and our vaccinated family couldn't be more grateful for modern science. It's a tight squeeze, but we're making it work because 15 months.

It's wild to think that until Sunday, I hadn't seen - let alone hugged - my parents since Christmas 2019. But this weekend they met us upstate and we got to have family meals and play Uno by the fire. Such a casual experience, but it meant the world to all of us.

It's crazy to think of the things that we took for granted in the Before Times. The hugs! The dance parties! The crowded theatres at intermission! I'm working on bringing them back. (Maybe not the crowded theatres, that one isn't up to me.) There are so many things about being social that I miss, but hugs are number one. That small physical connection with someone that knows you goes such a long way. Here's to bringing them back.

Hope in the magic

There's a light at the end of the tunnel✨

Hello, my friend! How are you feeling now that the spring air is permeating everything? We had some excellent news in New York this week as vaccinations are now open to anyone over 30, and as of next week anyone over 16. There really does seem to be a light at the end of this tunnel (ooooh there's a light!).

As the energy shifts and the moods lift, we see the flowers popping up, the green returning to the trees, and my pant collection has new growth all over the place. The sense of hope is palpable and feels well-deserved. We moved through a truly traumatic year plus, and our current flavor of hope is delicious and nutritious, welcoming the spirit to enjoy the world coming back to life after a much longer hibernation than we're used to.

It's also an excellent opportunity to explore our inner landscape and what we are releasing as we move into the warmer months. The habits and patterns that we've picked up over the last year might have kept us alive, but what about helping us thrive? They might not be doing that. A tarot reading is a great way to explore what might be ahead for you and how to navigate what is within your heart.  Curious? Book now!

Healing in the magic

By plugging in to nature 🌲

Happy Spring, my friend! The new astrological year and the beginning of Spring are upon us with last weekend's Spring Equinox. The days are getting longer (thank you daylight savings!) and the weather isn't as brutally cold here in New York.  You can feel the city lightening as the winter season fades.

I'll admit that the last few weeks I've been going a bit stir crazy and haven't been the best about practicing gratitude for the plethora of blessings each day.  The truth is, I'd become so disconnected that I had a hard time seeing what was right in front of me.

That lightening we are sensing isn't complete without a little healing and recharging. The Equinox gifted me with the opportunity to escape the city and plug in to nature upstate in an impromptu weekend retreat with a roaring fireplace, stream out front, and plenty of trees and fresh air.  What a perfect way to rest my nervous system and reset my energy! I returned to the city with a renewed sense of calm and groundedness, and feel as though I healed something that I didn't know needed tending.

Walking with the magic

And basking in its light ☀️

How are you holding up, First name / my friend? It has been quite the eventful week around here with the gift of vaccinations for many of the folks I hold dearest (including me!). The opportunity to get pricked was one that came on suddenly and before I knew it, I was walking out of Javits with an armful of Johnson & Johnson liquid magic.

I don't know how long it will be before the majority of us have received the vaccine, but the walk home on sunny 11th Avenue was one of the lightest feelings I've had in a year.  Walking with that magic, the gratitude for being mostly spared by the most gruesome of experiences this last year was radiating from me.  And now I have to continue to walk in that gratitude and light.

Walking has become a renewed practice for me in the last month or so.  After spending nearly a year in my apartment, the opportunity to walk around New York in the sun is one I'm dedicated to bring back into my life.  And it has helped my body feel less creaky (positive side effects!)

Spring cleaning the magic

Getting rid of the cobwebs 🕸

How are things, my friend? Here we are on the cusp of the anniversary of when everything changed. My instinct is to spring clean everything, get rid of stuff that doesn't currently serve me, and move the energy around in my physical space - because heaven knows that I've been doing exactly that in my life for the past year and it looks hella different.

A year ago I was a panicked theatre publicist and business owner with zero clients and the realization that I might have ended up somewhere I didn't mean to be.  And now? I am someone who has leveled up to a life that I didn't know existed; one that has me at the center taking an active role paving the way, rather than following the worn path of familiarity and comfort.

Taking the time and space to spring clean your magic is often reflected in your physical space and the releasing of things that you no longer need. It isn't always easy to clean and curate your physical surroundings to reflect your internal life, but even by moving a few things out of the way you create the space to breathe.

What are you spring cleaning? Reply and let me know ✨
